Research acceleration: The view inside OpenAI

OpenAI published a piece on internal research acceleration, which references an internal initiative called RSI without spelling out the acronym; a companion essay by chief scientist Jakub Pachocki also discusses RSI. The piece includes a chart showing OpenAI researchers' daily spending on coding agents climbing sharply since February 2026.

When a lab won't expand its own acronym in public writing, it's talking to insiders and investors more than to the rest of us. The spend chart shows per-researcher coding-agent costs climbing sharply since February.

AI compute provider Nscale is looking for $3.5B in pre-IPO financing

Nscale is negotiating up to $3.5B in pre-IPO financing, including roughly $2B from Nvidia and $1.5B in convertible notes led by Third Point, ahead of a planned New York listing. The London-based AI cloud firm cites $103B in contracted revenue, including a $45B deal with Anthropic.

Nvidia writing a $2B check into its own customer's balance sheet looks like vendor financing as much as outside investment. It raises the question of how much of that $103B in "contracted revenue" across the industry is really circular money.

Back to life: How Shield AI's future unmanned fighter made decades-old tech new again

Shield AI is preparing a tethered vertical-flight test of its autonomous VTOL X-BAT fighter prototype, suspended from a 180-foot crane. The propulsion system revives GE Aerospace technology that had been shelved since it was tested on the F-16 decades ago.

Reviving decades-old GE propulsion tech instead of building new hardware is a reasonable way to move fast.

U.S. Navy, Quad partners move to ‘fingerprint’ dark fleets in the Pacific with Vantor’s AI

DefenseScoop reported new details on a contract awarded by Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific to Vantor, the company that grew out of Maxar, to help the U.S. Navy and Quad partners track dark fleets in the Pacific using AI.

This is the kind of AI application that matters more than another chatbot demo: satellite imagery plus AI to track ships that are actively trying to hide, a real operational capability with an obvious adversary.

Anthropic IPO launch shifts toward mid-October

Anthropic has pushed back its IPO prospectus filing to late September and roadshow marketing to mid-October, with the listing expected to close just ahead of the U.S. midterm elections. The company is also finalizing a $15B revolving credit facility.

Timing a listing to close right before the midterms and lining up a $15B credit facility in parallel suggests Anthropic wants maximum optionality on both the political and financing calendar.
